Is Enough Enough?

How much money do we really need? It’s a good question to ask ourselves, because our natural default is to answer, “As much as we can possibly get.” That’s what seems to drive the sports agents and superstars who shoot for such astronomical contracts. It’s why small soft drinks at the movie theater cost $4.75. But is “as much as we can get” a legitimate motto to build our financial lives around?

There is wisdom, of course, in saving and investing, in planning ahead for unknown expenses. But riches do come with a great deal of worry and work. Market values can be lost. (Don’t we know it!) Decisions must be made, often before all the facts are in or it’s clear what to do. Even in choosing where and how much of our money to give away, there are many good people and causes that must be told no. And that usually doesn’t set too well with them.

Truth is, having “as much as we can get” is no wonder drug that fixes all our problems. Better to heed the advice from the Bible that says, “Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread” (Proverbs 30:8). There’s something about being satisfied with enough that makes for a happier man and a healthier sense of priority. How much would this one little tweak in mind-set change things in your life?

Pray this prayer: Lord, help me to keep from being constantly worried and concerned over money. Show me what it means to be satisfied with what I have.
