Michael Phelps is one of the more recent inspirations we have in sports today for setting a record-breaking standard by winning a total of eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympics. This eight, combined with previous medals he won, adds up to a grand total of 16 gold medals at the young age of 25. Because of his young age, extraordinary talent and the pride he brought to the country, Phelps has become an inspiration to Americans everywhere and is truly inspirational to watch.
9. Joe Namath 1969 Super Bowl Triumph
Namath made a bold move in the 1969 Super Bowl game when he prophetically declared that his team, the New York Jets, would defeat the Baltimore Colts and would hold the championship before the game had even begun. This prediction startled and angered many components and embarrassed those on his side. In the end, however, Namath’s prediction came true and the Jets won by a long shot with a final score of sixteen to seven.
8. The Unforgettable 1975 Thrilla in Manila: Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier
The Thrilla in Manila is quite possibly one of the most famous boxing matches ever recorded in history. The match was for the Heavyweight Boxing Championship of the World and took place in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, on October 1, 1975. The match was between world- renowned boxers Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. The fight had a long lead-up with several controversial statements made by Ali to slander Frazier. The rivalry was finally settled when Ali made the final knock-out in the 14th round. It was an event that would truly go down in history as one of the greatest fights of all time.
7. Seve Ballesteros Makes a Great Shot at the 18th hole in the 1984 British Open
Seve Ballesteros is an inspiration to golfers everywhere and has perhaps been even more influential than Tiger Woods. Ballesteros won second in The Open Championship at just 19 years old and went on to win several major tournaments between 1979 and 1988, including the 1984 British Open Championship. His success has been a tremendous inspiration to all golfers because of his true talent and unrelenting performance.
6. Jesse Owens Takes Home Gold Medal in Berlin, 1936
Years before Bolt, Jesse Owens changed history in an event that is still influential 75 years later. When Owens proudly entered Adolph Hitler’s great Berlin arena he put the theory of Aryan superiority to shame by smoking the competition with his incredible performance. Owens set three world records, one Olympic record and earned four track and field gold medals– a record that wouldn’t even come close to being overdone until 48 years later. Jesse Owens truly changed the world with his performance and was an inspiration to African Americans and people everywhere who were made to feel intimidated by the standards of society.

Usain Bolt truly lived up to his name when he broke his Olympic record in the 100m race and took first place with just 9.58 seconds time. Bolt is of Jamaican descent and holds world records for his outstanding times in 100 meter, 200 meter and the 4 x 100 meter relay races. These records have made him a three-time World and Olympic gold medalist.
4. Brandi Chastain Winning Goal at the 1999 World Cup
The pressure was on for the United States to win the final game against China and go on to become champions. When Brandi Chastain made the final goal during a penalty shootout, she was so overcome with joy and triumph that she fell to her knees and screamed with utter elation. The image became an instant classic around the country and became featured in well-known and established magazines such as Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated. Chastain is quoted claiming that her thoughts at the time were “This is the greatest moment of my life on the soccer field.”

Babe Ruth is quite possibly the greatest baseball player of all time. Ruth originally played for the Boston Red Sox, but was sold to the New York Yankees in 1919. Ruth changed the face of baseball forever with his outstanding talents and go-getter attitude. He made baseball an exciting game for everyone to watch. By the end of his career, he had assisted tremendously in the Yankees win of seven pennants and full World Series titles. His 60th home run record was an inspiring day for everyone because it was a goal that no one had accomplished. The event simply allowed everyone to marvel at such non-stop talent, dedication and excitement for the game of baseball.
2. Jackie Robinson Steals Home: 1955 World Series
Jackie Robinson was a legendary player because he broke the racial segregation barrier that mostly shunned black players from playing on primarily white baseball teams. Robinson made the first game of the 1955 World Series start out with a bang when he slid into a home run before the pitch could make it to the plate. The game was in a rough position at that time, with a 4 to 6 score on the eight inning and two outs, and Robinson knew what he had to do to save them. The crowd went nuts after the steal and plenty of discussion and controversy followed– most of it from the catcher Yogi Berra who insisted until his deathbed that Robinson was out and the call was false.
1. The 1951 World Series Game: Yankees vs. Giants
The 1951 World Series final game put the defending champions, the New York Yankees, against the New York Giants. The New York Giants ultimately won the National League pennant after three exciting playoff tournaments with the Brooklyn Dodgers. What’s most remembered about this event is the popularly termed “Shot Heard ‘Round the World,” which is a reference to Bobby Thomson’s miraculous home run featured in the video. For legendary ball player Joe DiMaggio, this would be the last World Series experienced before his retirement. For other legendary players such as Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle, it would be the first of many.
