Today, we're in the training room of Joe Gibbs Racing. We have everything in here that you would need to treat people who have been injured. You might wonder why a racing team would have a training room and have specialists to work on injuries. For those of you who aren't race fans, each Sunday we have seven people per team that go over the wall and work on the cars. These people are called the pit crew. They carry tires, jacks, equipment, etc. and they service the car all in about a total of 12 seconds. These guys are real athletes. It's just like football, sometimes we get these guys from smaller race teams or at our Nationwide shop and they work with us. It's kind of like the draft. These guys train three times a week to get ready for the weekend. So, as you can imagine, these guys can get injured. One second in the pits can cost you 200-300 yards on the racetrack. These guys are very important to our team and I thought you might find this interesting.
We've had two races now in the Cup series. As you may know, we were disappointed at Daytona. That race is so difficult to win. We've been there 19 times and won once. We've had good cars in the past and have led the race several times but just couldn't win. This year, we had good cars and we're sitting sixth and seventh for the last restart. We felt like we had a good chance to win with having teammates back-to-back. Unfortunately, we were shuffled back and happened to be in the wrong line. Denny ended up being wrecked by Jeff Gordon and Kyle ended up in the wrong line and ended up 14th. So, we finished 14th, 17th, and Joey ended up 20th.
The next week we then headed to L.A. It was ironic because we felt like Joey had the poorest car and he wound up finished fifth. Kyle was unlucky as he was on pit road when a caution came out. If you're able to get off of pit road before the rest of the field comes around, you end up at the front of the field. We missed this opportunity by fifty yards. The 48 car, Jimmy Johnson, made it and ended up winning the race. Kyle ends up a lap down and finished 13th. Everything went wrong for Denny in this race. I just mentioned how important pit crews are for a race team. We dropped a lugnut on pit road and we were forced to come back in. We had to then race from the back of the field and in the process cut down two tires. So, all of this shows you how hard these races are to win.
I recently attended the sixth race of the year for the Supercross series in Indianapolis. It was an awesome crowd, 65,000+ fans! We finished fourth with Justin Brayton and that was his highest finish of the year. As you know, Josh Grant has been hurt. Michael Byrne, our other rider, finished 14th.
