Matters of Opinion

Share

Some people believe the NFL's sudden-death format for overtime play should gravitate more toward the model they use in college, giving each team at least one shot at scoring on offense. That's an opinion, not a right or wrong.

Some people believe the safety benefits of restrictor plate racing are not worth the tight driving packs and the potential they create for multi-car crashes. They want racing, not robots. That's an opinion.

Some people believe they have every right to stay bitter at a person who's betrayed their trust. Or to flip off the driver who cuts into their lane of traffic without signaling. Or to be rude and inconsiderate in response to a rude and inconsiderate store clerk. Those are opinions.

But these Bible verses are not: "Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you" (Colossians 3:13). "In your anger do not sin" (Ephesians 4:29). "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths" (Ephesians 4:29).

The Bible, you see, is where opinions stop being opinions and become the way we're supposed to act. Rather than leaving us to guess or to let our own hot-and-cold emotions decide, the Scriptures just lay it out there. Boom. Whether we like it or not may be a matter of opinion. But whether or not it's best-and whether or not we should comply-is a matter of record. Go read it yourself.

Pray this prayer: Lord, too often I just go off like a cannon, doing the first thing that pops into my head. I pray for the wisdom that comes from your Word. And I ask for your help in learning how to navigate it.
