The fourth point is what I have seen God do in my life. I mentioned to you that I gave my life to Christ when I was 9 years old, spent a period of time in college drifting away from Him, got back around some other coaches and a spiritual teacher in Arkansas teaching me in Sunday School. I realized that I had not been living for God. They were living for Him. I was on God’s team but I hadn’t been living for Him. I got up in church one night and went forward and rededicated my life. I told God I was on His team but I wanted to live for Him. As I journeyed through life, I think there are undeniable things that have happened to me that can’t be accidents. That is my testimony about what God has done in my life.
I give you one example. Coaching was a big deal for me and I always wanted to be a head coach. I was an assistant coach in St. Louis and we had a situation there where the coaching staff was changing and John McKay, who I had coached for in college, was now the head coach at Tampa. He called and asked if I wanted to be the Offensive Coordinator in Tampa. This was a dream come true. I figured the next move would be a head coaching job in the NFL. That’s normally what happens. You are the Offensive Coordinator and then you get a chance at a head coaching job. I was all excited about that. We go down to Tampa and the season fell apart. I mean half way through that season with all that hard work my hand would shake and I can remember being so upset with what was happening with our football team. After the season, I was really torn with everything that happened so I was kind of praying and of all things, Don Coryell, my college coach, had just got the head coaching job with the Chargers. Here was my prayer: “God, don’t let him call unless you want me to leave here and go with him”. The next day Don Coryell called and he offered me the job out there. The problem was I wasn’t going to be the Offensive Coordinator. Someone else was going to be the Offensive Coordinator. I was just going to be an Assistant Coach. In other words, I was going to be backing up in my career. I’ve got to tell you that really upset me. After a discussion with Coach McKay, I did decide to take the job and leave Tampa but I have to tell you I had no peace about it. In the process, my little spiritual Father, George Tharel, is in Fayetteville, Arkansas and I made a decision to try and go back there and talk to George about this. I didn’t have any peace. I got on a plane and wound up in Fort Smith where I was to catch a puddle jumper up to Fayetteville, Arkansas. I got snowbound. The whole time I was questioning God as to why this was happening to me. I just wanted to go talk to George. I remember I had my bags and I went out front and there were two guys standing there talking about driving to Fayetteville. You couldn’t fly because they had shut down the airports. I walked over to these guys and asked if they were going to Fayetteville. I didn’t hesitate to ask. I just threw my bags in the back seat. So we take off down the road. I don’t know where these guys were from but they didn’t know how to drive in bad weather. They were all over the place so I said to myself “they aren’t going to make it”. Again, I am questioning God. I told the guys to pull over because I wanted out. I got out and climbed the center divider of the freeway so I could hitch hike my way back to Fort Smith. I am soaked with snow questioning God the whole time. I went back in and knew I wasn’t going to be able to get to Fayetteville so I booked my flight back to Tampa. I went over and sat down in that airport just totally dejected. I looked over and sitting next to me was a Bible. How many times have you seen that in an airport? So I picked up the Bible. I had been studying the first chapter of James and started reading. Without me saying anything, a guy tapped me on my shoulder and here is what he said. He said “I claimed that chapter in my life six months ago”. I turned to him and he just relayed to me that he had made a move with his occupation and then found out he did not qualify in that state. He was going to have to re-take a test to become a pharmacist which was almost impossible to pass. He panicked and thought he was going to lose his occupation. Through some miracle process, God led him to that test and he wound up passing it. Basically, he said the whole time he was worried about his occupation, once he put it in God’s hands everything worked out for him. I was dumbfounded. I was sitting there, had hardly said a word and this message was so important for me. I got up and wrote down his phone number so I could contact him later on. I got on that plane back to Tampa and said “God, you know I want to be a head coach. I’m through trying to do this by myself. I’m putting all of this in your hands.” I go to the Chargers where I am going to be the backfield coach. Two weeks after I got there the person who was the Offensive Coordinator got a head coaching job with the Giants. Coryell called me in and told me he wanted me to coach the quarterbacks which was the job I wanted. Two years later I was coach of the Washington Redskins.
That is just one incident in my life but it is one I wanted to share with you. This Book comes alive for you. If you are on God’s team and you trust Him, He is the one who will place you where He wants you to be with your occupation, finances, and relationships. He’s that person.
So today what I have shared with you I feel like is undeniable proof that God exists. So what have we said in recapping. There are four things that I think prove that God exists.
- This world and the way it is crafted.
- This Bible is a miracle book.
- Other’s lives like I have shared with you (Don Breaux).
- My life. I just shared one incident. There are many, many more.
Many of them are in this devotional that I have been sharing with you. So if that is the case, I just want to ask you this question. Are you on God’s team? Can you point to a specific time and place in your life where you asked Christ to come into your life, forgive you of your sins and be your Lord and personal Savior? If you haven’t, I want to give you that opportunity today. I think God exists, I think we need to make Him our head coach and I am going to give you a chance to do that if you will just pray this simple prayer with me.
Father, I know that I am a sinner. I know that you sent your son, Jesus Christ, to this earth. He lived a perfect life. You allowed Him to go to that cross and be crucified on that cross for my sins. He came back to life that third day. He sits with you. I want you to come into my life and forgive me of my sins and I want you to be my Lord and personal Savior. Amen.
God says if we pray that prayer meaning it, you are on God’s team. In our game plan for life we need to have a head coach and that is God.
Thank you for being with me today and I think what we talked about today is undeniable proof that God exists.
